Welcome to Heysham Lodge
On Thursday 18 December 1919, W. Bro. William Ambrose Winder and several other Brethren from Morecambe Lodge No 1561 held a preliminary meeting at the King’s Arms Hotel, The Crescent, Morecambe, to establish a new Lodge. W. Bro. W. Wright proposed that they call it ‘Heysham Lodge’. At a subsequent meeting W. Bro. Winder offered rooms at his premises in Derby Street, Morecambe, to be used as a Masonic Hall. The Warrant of Constitution for Heysham Lodge is dated 11 May 1920, and the Consecration was held on 15 October 1920. Continues below…
The current Heysham membership stands at 34.
We welcome members of all religions and ethnic backgrounds who have a belief in a single Supreme Being. The normal minimum age to join is 18. The Lodge meets, and dines, nine times per year on the third Friday of September through to May in the Masonic Hall at Derby Street, Morecambe, opposite the Post Office on Victoria Street.
Mission Statement
The Freemasons are a unique members’ organisation that has thrived for over 300 years. Having no political or religious affiliations, we comprise members of all ages, races, religions, cultures and backgrounds. We meet in our individual Lodges throughout the country where we have ceremonial traditions which encourage us both to be more tolerant and respectful and actively to fulfil our civic and charitable responsibilities; we also make time to eat, drink and meet together, and form lifelong friendships. Lodge History Continued…
Many of the founders had Yorkshire roots. Some belonged to Heysham Golf Club, and several were mariners working in and out of Heysham Harbour. These local interest groups helped to determine the Lodge’s name and its reputation as a seafaring Lodge.
The Lodge has overcome major obstacles including the Great Depression, World War II, and the recent Pandemic.
In 1937 the Lodge was too big, and it founded Sandylands Lodge No 5702. Towards the end of the war, there was still a long list of candidates and Heysham Lodge and its daughter Lodge founded Runic Lodge No 6019.
A Royal Arch Chapter attached to the Lodge was consecrated at the Masonic Hall on 15 December 1943.
Bro. Albert Modley, a comedian of national standing, is the most famous member of the Lodge. Above all, the Lodge has always been a happy Lodge and cognisant of his well-known catch phrase: ‘Eeeeeeehh! Isn’t it grand when you’re daft?’
